ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Five-second rule

The five-second rule is a made-up rule that people use when they accidentally drop food on the ground. The rule says that if you pick up the food within five seconds, it's still safe to eat.

Now, why do people believe in this rule? Well, when food falls on the ground, it can pick up dirt, germs, and other yucky things that can make us sick. But some people think that if you pick up the food really quickly, the germs won't have enough time to stick to it.

However, scientific studies have shown that this rule is not really true. Germs can stick to food in less than five seconds, and even if you pick it up really quickly, the food can still be contaminated. So it's always best to be safe and not eat food that has fallen on the ground.
