ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fivefold repetition

Okay kiddo, so in chess, there is something called a "fivefold repetition." This happens when the same position on the chess board happens five times in a row during a game. So, let's say you and your friend are playing chess and the pieces keep moving around and then they end up in the same spots 5 different times, that's a fivefold repetition.

Now, if this happens, there's a really special rule that comes into play. The game is then considered a draw, which means nobody really wins or loses. It's like a tie.

The reason for this rule is to make sure that nobody is just repeating the same moves over and over again to stall or try to win unfairly. If you're just repeating the same position over and over again, it's not really fair to your opponent and it's not really fun for either player. So, the fivefold repetition rule is there to make sure that everyone is playing fairly and that the game stays fun and exciting.
