ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fixational eye movements

When you look at something, your eyes don't just stay completely still. They actually move around a little bit without you even realizing it. These movements are called fixational eye movements.

It's like when you try to keep your head totally still while riding in the car. Even if you try to keep it still, it still moves around a little bit because of the bumps in the road. Your eyes are kind of like that.

But why do our eyes do this? Well, the fixational eye movements help our eyes stay focused on what we're looking at. It might sound strange, but if our eyes stayed completely still, our vision would actually get worse!

So the next time you're staring at something and your eyes seem like they're moving a little bit, don't worry - that's just your eyes doing their job to help you see better!
