ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Flash of unstyled content

Imagine you're getting dressed for the day, but you can't find your clothes in your closet. You have to go through all your clothes to find the right ones. This is what happens when a website doesn't have a "style guide" telling it how to look.

When you click on a website, it starts loading- but sometimes it can take a few seconds to find all the pictures and words that make up the site. This time when you see the website is called "Flash of Unstyled Content" or F.O.U.C.

It's like when you go to a fancy party and everyone is dressed up, but you haven't had a chance to change out of your play clothes yet- everyone sees you in your regular clothes before you get a chance to dress up too. That's what's happening with F.O.U.C. You see the website before all the parts have been styled and made to look pretty.

It's not a big deal- it just means you have to wait for everything to load before it looks perfect. But sometimes it can be annoying to see a website that's not quite ready yet.
