ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Flavour (particle physics)

Imagine you are eating an ice cream cone. The taste of ice cream is like a flavor. In the world of particle physics, these flavors are different types of subatomic particles that are responsible for making up everything around us. Just like how you can have different flavors of ice cream like chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry, in particle physics, there are different flavors like up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom. These particles differ in their mass and electric charge, which determines how they interact with other particles. For example, the up and down flavors make up the protons and neutrons that make up the atomic nucleus, while the charm and strange flavors were discovered in high-energy particle accelerators. Understanding the flavors of particles is important for understanding how the universe works at a fundamental level.
