Flensing

Flensing is when we remove the blubber from a whale or other big sea creature. Just like people have fat on their tummies and bums, whales have a lot of blubber all over their bodies to keep them warm in the cold water they live in.

When whale hunters capture one of these giant creatures, they use special knives to cut away the blubber layer. This is called flensing and it's a very careful process. They have to work slowly and carefully to make sure they don't accidentally damage the meat underneath the blubber or cause any harm to the animal.

This blubber is very valuable because it can be turned into oil, which can be used for all sorts of things like lighting lamps or making candles.

So flensing is a really important process for getting this valuable resource that we use in our homes every day.
