ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Flight

Have you ever seen a bird fly? They flap their wings really fast and then glide through the air. Well, machines called airplanes are like big birds that people can ride in!

The airplane has a special shape called wings that help it stay up in the air. The wings are shaped like a bird's wing and create something called lift that keeps the airplane up.

But how does the airplane move forward? That's where the engines come in! There are big engines on the airplane called jet engines that suck in air and then push it out really fast. This is called thrust and it helps the airplane move forward through the air.

When the airplane speeds up, it reaches a point where the lift from the wings is stronger than the weight of the airplane. This is called takeoff and the airplane leaves the ground and flies through the air!

But how does the airplane steer or turn? That's thanks to something called the rudder and the flaps on the wings. The rudder is a small wing on the tail of the airplane that can move left or right. The flaps on the wings can move up or down. By using these controls, the pilots can steer the airplane where they want it to go.

Flying in an airplane is really amazing because it lets us travel long distances much faster than we could by walking or driving. Plus, it's really fun to look out the window and see the world from high up in the sky!
