ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Floptical

Okay, so imagine you have a book with pages that you can write on, like a diary. Now imagine that each page can only hold a certain amount of words, but sometimes you want to write more than that.

A floptical is kind of like a special diary that can hold a lot more words on each page than a regular diary. It works by using a special kind of writing called "magneto-optical" technology.

Basically, inside the floptical there's a special material that can be heated up and cooled down with a laser to change the way it reflects light. By using this laser, you can write on the material and save information.

Flopticals were popular in the 1990s as a way to store data on computers, but they aren't used much anymore because we have better ways to store information now.
