ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fluid balance

Fluid balance means that our body is able to maintain the right amount of liquids in our body to keep us healthy. Imagine your body is like a big water park, and the water in the park needs to be just the right amount for all the rides to work correctly.

Our bodies are made up of many different fluids, like blood, sweat, and tears. These fluids all have different jobs to do, but they all need to be balanced. Too much or too little of any kind of body fluid can cause problems.

To keep everything balanced, our body has special systems in place. It's like the park has people who take care of the water, fix the pipes, and keep the water flowing. Our body has a system that keeps track of how much fluid we take in (through drinks and food) and how much we lose (through urine, sweat, and breathing).

It's like a scorekeeper who is keeping track of how many points everyone has. If too much fluid is lost, then the body tells us we are thirsty and we need to drink more. If too much fluid is taken in, the body tells us we need to go to the bathroom more often to get rid of the extra fluid.

If our body doesn't do a good job of keeping everything balanced, we can get dehydrated (which means our body doesn't have enough fluid) or over-hydrated (which means we have too much fluid). Dehydration can lead to feeling tired, dizzy, or even sick. Over-hydration can lead to swelling or a feeling of "water-logged."

So, just like at the water park, it's important to make sure everything stays balanced so we can have a fun and healthy time!
