ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Folk classification

Folk classification is when people put things into groups based on what they look like or how they act. It's kind of like a game of sorting where you put things in different piles based on similarities.

Let's say you have a bunch of animals like a cat, dog, and bunny. You could sort them into different groups based on things like whether they have fur or if they have tails. So, the cat and bunny might go in one pile because they both have fur, while the dog goes in a different pile because it has fur and a tail.

People all over the world use folk classification to help them understand the world around them. It can be helpful for things like finding food, identifying plants, or understanding different types of animals. It's a way to make sense of things based on what we can see and understand, even if we don't know all the scientific names for everything.
