ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

For-profit prisons

For-profit prisons are prisons run by companies instead of the government. A for-profit prison is like any other prison but owned by a private company. A company will be in charge of running the prison, and it makes money by charging fees for the people who are held there. So, the company which runs the prison will get paid for every person held in the prison. The fees paid to the company are much higher than the fees the government would pay to run these prisons, which makes it more profitable.
