Formalism (philosophy)

Formalism is a kind of philosophy which says that things like mathematics and logic have certain structures which you can use to understand the world. It's like a set of rules that you can use to figure things out. For example, if you learn algebra, it can help you solve math problems. That's like formalism because you're following a set of rules - the rules of algebra - to solve the problem.
