ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Four Modernizations

Imagine you have a toy car that you really like, but it doesn't have all the features you want. Maybe it doesn't have lights or a radio. You might want to make some changes to make your toy car better and more modern. This is similar to what was happening in China in the late 1970s.

China's leader at the time, Deng Xiaoping, wanted to make China a more modern and powerful country. He realized that China needed to improve in four important areas, and he called these improvements the "Four Modernizations." These four areas were agriculture, industry, defense, and science and technology.

1. Agriculture: This refers to farming and growing crops. China wanted to make sure that farmers had the tools and knowledge to produce more food. They wanted to make the farming process more efficient and increase the amount of food available for the growing population.

2. Industry: Industry means making things like cars, clothes, and electronics. China wanted to improve its industries so that it could produce more goods to sell both within the country and to other countries. This would help create more jobs and make the economy stronger.

3. Defense: Defense is about protecting a country from any kind of danger or threats. China wanted to strengthen its military and make sure it could defend itself if another country tried to harm it. This involved improving their weapons and technology.

4. Science and Technology: Science and technology are all about new inventions and discoveries. China wanted to invest in research and development to create new technologies and make scientific advancements. This would help the country become more innovative and competitive in the world.

So, just like you might add lights and a radio to your toy car to make it better, China wanted to improve these four areas to make the country more modern and powerful. By focusing on these areas, China hoped to lift its people out of poverty, improve their standard of living, and make the country more prosperous overall.

Deng Xiaoping and the Chinese government worked hard to implement policies and initiatives that would drive these modernizations forward. This included investing in education, improving infrastructure, promoting foreign trade, and attracting foreign investment to help accomplish these goals.

Over time, China succeeded in achieving significant progress in these four areas. Today, China is one of the world's leading agricultural producers, has a strong manufacturing industry, possesses a modern military, and has made remarkable advancements in science and technology.

In summary, the Four Modernizations were a set of goals and plans that China had to make the country better in four important areas: agriculture, industry, defense, and science and technology. By focusing on these areas, China became more modern and powerful, improving the lives of its people and making the country more prosperous.
