ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Four Olds

So, have you ever heard that old song your parents love and you don't really like it? Or how about that old toy you used to play with but now it's boring? Well, imagine if everyone in your whole country had to like and use only old songs, old books, old ideas, and old traditions, even if they didn't make sense anymore. That's kind of what happened in a place called China a long time ago.

The government in China decided they only wanted people to like and use things that were old and traditional, like old books and old ways of thinking. They called these things the "four olds" – old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits. The leaders hoped this would help keep things the same and make sure no one questioned the government's power.

But some people in China thought this was a silly rule. They wanted to think for themselves and use new ideas to make their country better. So they started to protest and speak out against the censorship and the strict government rules.

Eventually, the government realized that they couldn't control what people thought and liked. They removed the strict rule that people could only like and use the "four olds" and allowed people to have more freedom to express themselves. Today, people in China can read and watch new things and share their own ideas without fear of punishment.

So, to sum it up, the "four olds" were an old rule in China that said people could only like and use old things, but some people wanted to be free to think for themselves and use new ideas. The government eventually realized they couldn't control people's thoughts and removed the rule.
