ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Frances Beale

Frances Beale is a very special lady who did a lot of important things for Black people in America. She was born a long time ago, in the year 1940, when things were very different for Black people than they are now.

Frances was part of a group called the Civil Rights Movement. This group wanted to make sure that Black people had the same rights as everyone else. They wanted Black people to be treated fairly and equally to others.

Frances worked really hard to help other Black people. She helped to start a group called the Black Women's Liberation Committee. This group wanted to make sure that Black women were heard and that they had a voice in important decisions.

Frances wrote a very important paper called "Double Jeopardy: To Be Black and Female." This paper talked about how hard it was to be a Black woman in America. Black women had to deal with racism and sexism, which means that people treated them unfairly because they were both Black and female.

Frances Beale wanted to make sure that people knew about these things and that they could work together to make things better. She showed people that Black women were just as important as everyone else.

Frances Beale was a brave lady who fought for what she believed in and helped to make the world a better place. She is still remembered and respected today for all the things she did to help Black people.
