ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Francoist Catalonia

Okay kiddo, let me explain about Francoist Catalonia.

Do you know who Franco was? He was a very powerful man who ruled over Spain a long time ago, from 1939 to 1975. During his rule, he was in charge of everything in the country and he didn't let people have much freedom or say in what happened.

Now, Catalonia is a region in Spain with its own language, culture and traditions. During Franco's time, he didn't really like the people of Catalonia and he tried to take away their rights to speak their language and practice their traditions. This made the people of Catalonia very unhappy and they started to resist Franco's rule.

Even though Franco tried to suppress the people of Catalonia, they continued to fight for their rights and their freedom. They held protests and rallies to show their solidarity and try to get their voices heard.

Finally, in 1975, Franco died and Spain transitioned to a democracy. This meant that Catalonia was able to have more rights and freedoms again. Today, Catalonia is still fighting for even more independence from the rest of Spain, but they are able to speak their language, practice their traditions, and have more say in how their region is run.
