Frankish Hymnal

Okay kiddo, imagine you go to a music store and you see a book with a bunch of different songs in it. These songs are called a hymnal.

So a long time ago, in a place called Frankish Empire (which is now mostly in France), there were people who believed in Christianity. They also liked to sing songs to show their love for God.

One day, a group of these people decided to put together a book of their favorite Christian songs. They called it the Frankish Hymnal.

Now, this book had songs with lyrics in a language called Latin. Latin was an important language at that time for things like religion and education.

The Frankish Hymnal became really popular among Christians in the Frankish Empire. People would sing these songs in church services or during special events, like weddings or funerals.

The cool thing about the Frankish Hymnal is that it was one of the first songbooks to use a specific type of musical notation called neumes. Neumes are symbols that tell you how to sing the music. Before this, people would just teach the songs by singing them and having others memorize them. But neumes made it easier to share the music with others who couldn't be there in person to learn it.

So there you have it, a Frankish Hymnal is a book of Christian songs in Latin that was made a long time ago in a place called the Frankish Empire. It was popular among Christians and used a special kind of musical notation called neumes.
