ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Freedoms of the air

The freedoms of the air are like rules that say how airplanes can fly over different countries. It's kind of like how you have rules to follow when you're playing a game with your friends.

There are five freedoms of the air.

The first freedom allows an airline to fly over a foreign country without landing. Imagine you are in a toy car and you're driving on a friend's driveway. The first freedom allows you to drive across the driveway without stopping or getting out of your car.

The second freedom allows airlines to land in a foreign country for refueling or to get passengers or cargo. This is like when you go on a trip with your family and you stop at a gas station to fill up the car with gas or get some snacks.

The third freedom allows airlines to drop off passengers or cargo in a foreign country. This is like when you go to a birthday party and your mom drops you off at a friend's house.

The fourth freedom allows airlines to pick up passengers or cargo in a foreign country and take them to their home country. This is like when your dad goes to the store to buy groceries and he brings them home in the car.

The fifth freedom allows airlines to pick up passengers or cargo in one foreign country and take them to another foreign country. This is like when you and your friends go to a park to play, but then you all decide to go to another park that's further away.

So, the freedoms of the air are like a set of rules that allow airlines to fly over and land in different countries, which makes it easier for people and things to travel around the world.
