ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Freeway removal

You know how you play with toy cars and make them go on a track? Well, real cars can also go on a track that is called a freeway. But sometimes, the freeway gets old and worn out, and people start to think it's not safe anymore. When that happens, some grown-ups decide to take the freeway away and make something else instead.

Just like when you take away your toys and put new ones in their place. When they take out the freeway, it might look like a big mess and much space to you. But, the grown-ups have special machines that can make it look all clean again. They break the freeway into smaller pieces and make sure to clean up all the trash and debris that might have piled up over the years.

After cleaning up all the mess, they begin to build the new thing they thought would be better for the area. This could be a park, a new road that looks different, or even a bike lane. The new thing will look pretty and help people stay safe when they are walking or cycling since there would be no cars around to make them feel unsafe.

So, taking out a freeway may look like a big thing, but buildings and roads can have a lifespan, and when something is old, it needs to go away sometimes. When that happens, big people will make sure everything works well again and builds something new that is safe and fun for everyone.
