ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

French language in Laos

Well, Elia was listening to his grandmother tell stories about the beautiful country of Laos. He learned that the people of Laos speak many different languages, but one of them is called French.

Grandma explained that a long time ago, Laos used to be a colony of France. That means French people came and took over Laos for a while, and they taught the people of Laos to speak their language.

Even though Laos is now its own independent country, many people still speak French there. Some people learn it in school or use it in their jobs, like in government or business.

So, Elia, if you ever visit Laos, you might hear people speaking French along with other languages like Lao, English, or even Chinese! It's just one of the many interesting things you might discover in this wonderful country.
