ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Frequency administration

Frequency administration is like a game of let’s pretend with radios. You know how when you’re talking on your walkie-talkie with your friend, sometimes you can hear other people talking at the same time? That’s because different groups of people are using the same frequencies to communicate with each other.

Just like how we take turns when we play games, different groups of people, like airplane pilots, taxi drivers, or emergency responders, take turns using different frequencies on their radios. This is called frequency administration. It’s a way for everyone to communicate safely without interrupting each other or causing accidents.

Someone called the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is in charge of making the rules of the game. They assign different frequencies to different groups of people, so everyone has their own channel to talk on.

So, think of it this way: different frequencies are like different phone numbers. When you want to talk to someone, you call their number. That’s their “frequency”. But, if two people have the same number or frequency, then they can’t both talk on the phone at the same time. That’s when the FCC steps in and assigns a different number or frequency for each person or group to use, just like when parents make sure each child has their own toy to play with.

And that’s how frequency administration works in a nutshell!
