ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Frost (temperature)

Frost is something that happens on very cold days when water in the air turns into tiny ice crystals. It's kind of like how your breath looks when it's really cold outside, except it happens all over the ground and on things like trees and bushes.

When it's cold enough outside for frost to form, the air can't hold as much water as it usually does. So any extra moisture in the air starts to collect on surfaces as ice crystals instead. That's why you might see a layer of frost on the grass in the morning, because the grass has collected all the ice crystals that formed during the night.

Frost can be really pretty to look at, but it can also be dangerous for plants and crops. If it's very cold for a long time, the frost can damage or even kill plants because the ice crystals can damage the cells inside.

So even though frost might look cool, it's generally not a good thing for plants or crops. But don't worry, even if it does happen it usually melts pretty quickly once the sun comes up and the air starts to warm up again.
