ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Funding opportunity announcement

Imagine you really like Lego and want to make a cool new creation with lots of pieces. But you don't have enough money to buy all the Lego pieces yourself. So, you ask your friends, family, and even strangers for help.

This is kind of like what a funding opportunity announcement is. It's a way for people or groups who want to do something important (like scientists who want to cure a disease) but don't have enough money to get help from others who have money (like the government).

The government will put out an announcement saying that they have some money to give to people who have good ideas and need help making them happen. They'll say what kind of ideas they're looking for, how much money they have to give, and how long people have to apply for it.

People who want the money will write up a plan (kind of like a Lego building plan) explaining what they want to do, how much money they need, and why it's important. The government will look at all the plans and decide who gets the money (kind of like judging a Lego building contest).

This helps lots of people who want to do good things but don't have enough money on their own. It also helps the government because they get to support things that are important to them without having to do all the work themselves. And just like a cool Lego creation, everyone is happy and proud of what they've made!
