Gasworks

Okay kiddo, so let's talk about gasworks. You know how we use gas to cook our food or heat our homes, right? Well, gasworks is a place where they used to make gas for people to use.

Gas was made from coal in big machines called gasometers. The coal would be heated up so much that it would produce gas that could be used as fuel. But making the gas was a messy and dangerous process.

The gasworks had to take all of the leftover coal or waste from the gas-making process and dispose of it, so it didn't harm the environment. Some of the waste was so harmful that it had to be put in specially made pits, and some even had to be shipped away.

In the old days, gasworks were found in almost every city. But since then, we've found better and safer ways to make gas, so we don't need gasworks anymore. Nowadays, the old gasworks are often turned into museums, parks, or other public spaces that people can visit and learn about how things used to be.
