A Gaussian function is like a bell curve. It looks like a mountain with a pointy peak and wide sides that slope down. It's sometimes used to describe amounts of things that spread out over different numbers. For example, if you have 10 people, and you wanted to know how tall each one is, you might find that the heights are spread out in a Gaussian Curve. The tallest person would be at the tip of the peak, and then the other heights would be spread out both sides of the peak, getting shorter and shorter until they reach the bottom of the mountain.
