Okay kiddo, so picture this: Imagine you and your best friend are playing in the park. Your friend is a girl, and you're a boy. But, you may have noticed that sometimes people treat boys and girls differently. Like, maybe some people think boys are better at sports or being leaders, while some people might think girls are better at taking care of babies or cooking.
Now, imagine if everyone treated you and your friend the same way, and thought that you both were great at anything you wanted to do. That's what gender empowerment is all about - making sure that both boys and girls are treated fairly and equally, no matter what they want to do.
The Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM) is a way to measure how empowered women are in a particular country. It looks at things like how many women are in leadership positions in the government and business, how much money they make compared to men, and how much education they have.
Basically, if women have equal opportunities to men in these areas, they are more empowered. The GEM gives us a score to help us understand how much women are being empowered in each country, and it allows us to see which countries are doing well and which ones need to improve.
So, the Gender Empowerment Measure is a way to make sure that girls and women are treated fairly and are given the same opportunities as boys and men to be successful in life.
