ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gender-specific job title

Okay, let's talk about job titles. A job title is the name of the job that a person does. For example, a doctor is a person who helps people get better when they are sick. A teacher is a person who helps children learn new things.

Sometimes, job titles have words that say if the job is for a boy or a girl. These are called gender-specific job titles. Gender means if you are a boy or a girl, or if you are a man or a woman.

Sometimes people think that only boys can do certain types of jobs and only girls can do other types of jobs. For example, some people used to think that only boys could be doctors and only girls could be nurses. But this isn't true! Boys and girls can be doctors, nurse, or anything they want to be!

So, we should try to use job titles that don't say if the job is only for a boy or a girl. This is called gender-neutral job titles. Gender-neutral means that anyone can do the job, no matter if they are a boy, a girl, a man, or a woman.

Using gender-neutral job titles is important because it helps to show that boys and girls can do anything they want to do. And that's pretty cool, right?
