ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gene knockout

Okay kiddo, let me explain what a gene knockout is. So our body has something called DNA which tells our cells what to do. Each instruction on the DNA is like a recipe, and each recipe makes something in our body.

A gene is like a recipe for making a protein. Proteins are very important for our body to work properly. But sometimes, some genes might cause problems in our body. Gene knockout is like taking out that recipe from the DNA so that it cannot make the protein anymore.

Think about it like a puzzle. Each piece of the puzzle is like a gene in our body. If we take out one piece, the puzzle looks different and might not work the way it used to. It's the same with a gene knockout. By taking out a certain gene, the body might work differently or not work at all in some cases.

Scientists can do this in a lab to study how our body works. They can take out a gene and see what happens to cells or animals. By doing this, they can learn more about what each gene does and how it affects our body.
