General Post Office

Okay kiddo, so you know how mail gets delivered to our house in the mailbox? Well, before there were mailboxes, everyone had to go to a special building called a General Post Office to get their mail.

The General Post Office was like a big house for all the mail to stay and for people to come and get their mail from. The workers at the General Post Office were called Postmasters and they were in charge of making sure everyone's mail got to the right place.

Sometimes people would send letters or packages to someone far away and they would have to go on a really long journey to get there. The General Post Office had special transportation called mail coaches and mail trains to help it get to its destination faster.

Nowadays, we have mailboxes and mail carriers that deliver our mail right to our doorstep. But the General Post Office was an important part of history because it helped people communicate and stay in touch before technology made things easier.
