Hi there!
Do you know about how babies are made from a mommy and a daddy's genes coming together? These genes are like tiny little things inside our bodies that give us our traits, like what color our eyes are or how curly our hair is.
Sometimes, though, these genes can have mistakes, or "bad genes". Just like how we sometimes get sick, our genes can also have things that make us not quite right, like maybe we can't see as well or we get sick easily.
Now, you might be wondering - if these bad genes are still there, won't they just keep getting passed down from parents to kids? Well, that's where genetic purging comes in!
Genetic purging is when these bad genes get "purged", or gotten rid of, from the population. This happens when these bad genes make it harder for someone to survive and have babies. For example, if someone has a gene that makes them very sick and they die before they have kids, then that bad gene won't get passed down to their kids. Or, if someone has a gene that makes them not able to have kids of their own, then again, that bad gene won't get passed down to their kids.
So, over time, these bad genes get "purged" from the population because people who have them are less likely to survive and have babies. This means that the population gets healthier overall, because the bad genes slowly disappear.
It's kind of like cleaning out a messy room - you get rid of the things that don't belong or are broken, and over time, the room becomes cleaner and better organized. And just like how our bodies can get better at fighting off sicknesses and getting stronger, our genes can also get healthier over time thanks to genetic purging!
