ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Geographic range limit

Imagine that you have a toy car that you really love to play with. You like to race it around your house, but you know that you can't take it outside because there are some places that are just too far away for you to reach by yourself.

Well, animals and plants also have places that are too far for them to reach, and we call those places "geographic range limits." These are the areas where the animal or plant can't live because the conditions are not suitable for them.

For example, a tiger might live in India, but it can't live in Antarctica because it's too cold. Or a cactus might grow in the deserts of Arizona, but it can't grow in the rainforests of Brazil because it's too wet.

Geographic range limits are really important because they help scientists understand where different species live and why. They also help us understand how different animals and plants might be impacted by things like climate change, habitat destruction, or other environmental factors that could change the conditions in the places where they live.
