Geography of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a big island in the ocean. It is part of the Caribbean, which is a group of islands next to South America. Puerto Rico looks like a rectangle, and it is about 110 miles long by 35 miles wide. You know how Earth has a lot of water, right? Well, Puerto Rico has a lot of water, too! It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other.

The island is divided into three parts: the western mountains, the central valley, and the eastern coastal plains. The western mountains are just what they sound like - big, tall hills that are covered in trees and plants. They can be hard to climb, but they are beautiful to look at.

The central valley is where many people live. It is flat and has lots of farms and cities. This is where most of the businesses and homes are, and where many of Puerto Rico's famous landmarks are located, like the city of San Juan or El Yunque National Forest.

The eastern coastal plains are warm and sunny. The beaches there are so pretty! You can swim, surf, or just lay on the sand and soak up the sun. But be careful - the water can be really deep and the waves can be really big!

Puerto Rico is also home to some special animals and plants that don't live anywhere else in the world. Like the Coqui frog, which makes a really cute sound at night, or the Puerto Rican parrot, which is endangered.

So there you have it - Puerto Rico is a pretty cool place with lots of water, mountains, valleys, cities, and beaches!
