Hey kiddo, do you know that when you get sick, there are tiny creatures (germs) that cause it? Do you want to know more about them?
So, long ago people didn't know that little tiny things made them sick. But then, a scientist named Louis Pasteur discovered these little creatures called germs that are so tiny that we can't see them with our own eyes!
Germs are like tiny living things that can be good or bad. Some germs help you digest your food, but other germs can make you sick by using your body as a place to live and grow. The germ theory of disease is the idea that germs cause diseases, and it has helped people understand how diseases are spread and how to prevent them.
Imagine that you have a bunch of toys on your play mat. Now imagine that some of your toys are really cool, but some of them are covered in yucky slimy stuff. If you play with the yucky toys, the slimy stuff will get all over your hands, and if you don't wash your hands, the yucky stuff can make you sick. Germs are like the yucky slimy stuff on the toys. They can travel from one person to another and make them sick too.
So, we need to be careful and keep ourselves clean, especially when we are around other people or when we touch things that lots of other people touch, like doorknobs or toys. It's a good idea to wash your hands often and cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze to help stop germs from spreading.
That's the germ theory of disease! It's pretty cool that something so tiny can make us sick, but we have also learned how to stop them from spreading by washing our hands and being careful about what we touch.
