ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Germanism (linguistics)

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of Germanism in language? No? Well, let me explain it to you like you're five.

So, you know how different countries have different languages and they have their own special words and way of talking? Germanism is when words from the German language are used in other languages, like English or French.

For example, have you heard the word "angst"? It's actually a German word that means fear or anxiety. But, people also use it in English to describe that feeling. That's a Germanism in action!

Sometimes a whole phrase or expression from German can also be used in other languages. Like "zeitgeist", which means the general feeling or mood of a particular time.

Now, why does this happen? Well, sometimes people use German words because they just sound cool or they want to show off their language skills. Other times, it's because there isn't a good equivalent word in their own language.

So kiddo, that's what Germanism in language means. It's when German words or phrases are used in other languages. Pretty cool, huh?
