ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gharjamai

Gharjamai is a term used in some societies where a man goes to live with his wife's family after they get married. This is different from the usual practice where the woman goes to live with her husband's family.

So, imagine you have a friend named John. John gets married to his girlfriend, Jane. Now, usually, when people get married, it's Jane who goes to live with John's family, right? But in some cases, John might go to live with Jane's family instead.

It's like John is now a part of Jane's family and will live with them, eat with them, and do everything just like he would if he lived with his own family. This is what gharjamai means.

It might sound a bit strange because it's not something that happens very often and not everyone thinks it's a good idea. But in some families and communities, it's a way to keep the family together and make sure everyone is taken care of.

So, to put it simply, gharjamai means a man goes to live with his wife's family after they get married instead of living with his own family.
