Global Administrative Unit Layers (GAUL)

Okay kiddo, imagine that the whole world is like a giant puzzle with lots of small pieces, and each piece represents a different place. These places can be countries, provinces, states or even smaller cities and towns. Now, when we want to organize and understand all these places, we need to create different layers just like when you put puzzle pieces on top of each other.

That's where global administrative unit layers (GAUL) come in. These layers help us to group different places into logical categories by things like country, region, and municipality. This helps us to easily understand where things are and how they are connected.

For example, if we take the United States, it has 50 states, each with their own capital city and smaller cities and towns within them. GAUL would group the states into one layer, then within each state, create another layer for the cities and towns. This makes it easier to understand where everything is when looking at a big map of the United States.

Overall, GAUL helps people who work with geography and mapping to better understand the complex and varied world we live in, by creating clear, organized layers for all the different places around the world.
