ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Glorious Revolution

Okay kiddo, imagine you are playing a game with your friends and one of your friends is always bossing everyone around and making unfair rules. One day, you all decide you've had enough and decide to take action. You come up with a plan to tell your friend that they can't be the boss anymore and you get all your other friends to help you.

Now, this is kind of like what happened in England a long time ago. The King of England, named James II, was like that bossy friend. He was always trying to make all the important decisions and didn't listen to what the people wanted. The people of England, especially the wealthy ones, didn't like this and they decided they wanted a change.

So, in 1688, a group of important people asked a man named William of Orange to come from a different country (the Netherlands) to be the new king of England. William agreed and he brought an army with him to help him take over the throne. The people in England were really happy about this and they supported William.

When William and his army arrived in England, James II didn't even try to fight back because he knew he wouldn't win. So, he just left the country and went to live in France. This was called the Glorious Revolution because it was a big change in how the country was ruled, but it didn't involve a lot of fighting or bloodshed.

As the new king, William of Orange promised to listen to what the people of England wanted and to share power with them. This was a big deal because it meant that the people had more of a say in how the country was run. So, just like how you and your friends worked together to make things fair, the people of England also worked together to make things better for everyone. And that's how the Glorious Revolution helped change England for the better, just like your plan helped change your game for the better!
