ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Glow fuel

Let me tell you about something called glow fuel, my dear little one. You know how you need food to have energy and stay active? Well, it's the same for things called engines that make vehicles, like toy cars or planes, go. They need a special kind of fuel to power up and work. This fuel is called glow fuel because it glows in the dark.

When we say glow fuel, we're talking about a special kind of liquid that looks like water but isn't. This liquid has a few things in it that make it special. One of those things is methanol – a type of alcohol that's used in many different things like windscreen cleaner, antifreeze for cars, and even some snowflakes! When we mix methanol with other things like nitromethane, castor oil, and some other things, we have glow fuel.

Now, this fuel isn't just any regular fuel that you can put in a car or a plane. You can't get it at your local gas station. It's specially made for engines that need a little extra help starting up. The engines that use glow fuel have something called a glow plug, which is kind of like a little light bulb inside the engine that glows when you put electricity through it. When the plug glows, it heats up the fuel and the fuel starts to burn, which creates energy that makes the engine go.

So, when you put this glow fuel into an engine with a glow plug and turn it on, you'll see a little glow inside the engine. It'll get hot and start making the engine go. But remember, you can't drink it or put it in your mouth because it's very dangerous. It's only meant to be used in engines and should be handled safely by adults.

That's what glow fuel is, my dear little one. A special kind of liquid that makes engines go when they have a little bit of help from a glowing plug inside.
