ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Glow plug (diesel engine)

Okay kiddo, so you know how diesel engines work, right? They use something called diesel fuel to make the engine go vroom vroom. But, sometimes when it's really cold outside, or the engine isn't warmed up yet, it can be hard to start the engine.

That's where a glow plug comes in! A glow plug is like a little metal stick that gets really, really hot when you turn the key to start the engine. The heat from the glow plug helps the diesel fuel burn easier so the engine can start.

Think of it like a warm blanket on a cold day. Just like how the warm blanket helps your body feel better, the heat from the glow plug helps the diesel fuel feel better so it can start the engine easier.

Once the engine is running, the glow plugs turn off because the engine is warm enough to keep going on its own. And that's how a glow plug helps diesel engines start even when it's cold outside!
