ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Golden age (metaphor)

Imagine you have a toy that you love to play with. You play with it every day and it brings you so much happiness. One day, you accidentally break the toy and it can no longer be fixed. You feel really sad and miss playing with your toy.

This is kind of what people mean when they talk about a "golden age". It's a time in the past when things were really good and everyone was happy. People often think about this time with nostalgia, which means they remember it fondly and wish things could be like that again.

For example, some people might say that the 1950s were a golden age in America. Back then, the economy was really good and people felt like they had a lot of opportunities. They remember the time with nostalgia because they think things were better then than they are now.

So, a golden age is really just a metaphor that adults use to talk about a time that they remember as being really good or happy. It's like a special time that they wish they could go back to.
