Gradient pattern analysis

Gradient pattern analysis is a way of looking at pictures and figuring out how dark or light different parts of the picture are. Let's say you have a picture of a sunset. Right where the sun is, it's very bright and orange, but closer to the ground it's darker and maybe even a little purple.

When we use gradient pattern analysis, we look at the picture and divide it up into tiny little squares. Then we figure out how much the color changes in each square as we move from one side to the other.

For example, if one square starts out very bright and ends up very dark, we say that it has a "large gradient" because the change in color is really big. If another square starts out dark and ends up slightly lighter, we say that it has a "small gradient" because the change in color is only a little bit.

We go through all of the squares in the picture and figure out how big or small their gradients are. This gives us a better idea of what the picture looks like and how the different colors and brightness levels are working together.
