ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Graphical model

Imagine you have a puzzle that has many different pieces. Each piece is important and gives you some clue or hint about the big picture. Now imagine you have to show how all these pieces are connected and how they help you solve the puzzle. This is similar to what a graphical model does.

A graphical model is like a puzzle of information that helps us understand how different things are related to each other. It is a way of representing complicated information in a simple and easy-to-understand way using pictures and symbols.

For example, let's say you want to know what factors affect the health of a plant such as sunlight, water, and soil. A graphical model can help you understand how these factors are related to each other and what role they play in keeping the plant healthy.

In a graphical model, each factor is shown as a separate shape, usually a circle or a rectangle. These shapes are called nodes. The nodes are then connected to each other by lines or arrows. The lines or arrows are called edges.

Each node represents a different factor or variable that can affect the outcome of a process or event, such as the health of a plant. The arrows or lines show the direction and strength of the relationships between these variables. For example, an arrow pointing from the water node to the plant health node shows how water affects the health of the plant.

By looking at the graphical model, we can quickly see how different factors are related to each other and how they affect the outcome we are interested in. This makes it easy to understand and analyze complex systems and processes.
