Great Canadian flag debate

Ok kiddo, do you see that flag with a red background with a white square in the center and a red maple leaf in the middle? That’s the Canadian Flag!

But did you know that before that flag was made, Canada didn’t even have an official flag? Way back in 1964, some people thought it would be a good idea to have a proper flag for Canada, but they couldn’t agree on what it should look like.

Some people wanted the flag to have a picture of the Union Jack (a British flag) on it, because Canada used to be part of Britain. Other people wanted a flag that represented both English-speaking and French-speaking Canadians. Some people even wanted to keep using the old flag, which was just a plain red flag with the British coat of arms on it.

Everyone had their own idea of what the flag should look like, and they all argued about it for a long time. This argument was called the Great Canadian Flag Debate, and it lasted six months!

Eventually, they made a committee to come up with some designs for the flag. A man named George Stanley was on that committee, and he came up with a cool design that had a red maple leaf on a white square with two red bars on either side.

This design became really popular, and after a lot of arguing and voting, it was chosen to be the new Canadian flag. And that’s why we have the beautiful flag we have today!
