Grotesque

Hi there! Grotesque is a funny word that can mean something that is so strange or weird that it makes you feel uncomfortable. Imagine if you saw a picture of a person with a really big nose that was all twisted and turned, almost like it wasn't real. That might be considered grotesque!

The word comes from a style of art that was popular a long time ago. Back then, artists would make drawings on the walls underground, like a secret cave. They drew pictures of things like animals that had human heads, or humans with really big eyes and small bodies. These pictures were meant to be funny and surprising, but they could also be a little creepy.

Nowadays, we use the word "grotesque" to describe all sorts of things that make us feel weird or uneasy. It could be a scary movie with monsters that have weird body parts, or a dress that is made out of a material that looks like it's alive. Anything that is strange, exaggerated or distorted in a way that makes us feel uncomfortable can be called grotesque.
