ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Groundwater energy balance

Groundwater energy balance is like a bank account that tells us how much money we have at the end of the month. For groundwater, it’s like finding out how much water we have left in the ground after we have used some of it.

Just like we use money to buy things, we use water for many different things like washing dishes, taking a shower or growing crops. But just like we can't spend all our money at once, we also can't use all the water in the ground at once because we need a certain amount to sustain life.

So, the groundwater energy balance tells us how much water is going in and how much is going out of the ground. It’s like saying how much money you have at the beginning of the month and how much you spent and earned in the meantime.

Sometimes, we might use too much water or there might be a drought and not enough water is coming into the ground. This is like spending more money than we make, and it's not good for our bank account, just like it’s not good for the groundwater.

To make sure we have enough water for everything we need, we need to keep an eye on the groundwater energy balance and try to use water wisely.
