ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Growth factor receptor

Okay kiddo, do you know what cells are? They are tiny things in our body that do different jobs to keep us healthy.

And do you know what proteins are? They are like tiny machines in our body that help the cells do their jobs.

Now, some cells need to hear messages to do their job properly, kind of like when Mom or Dad tells you to do something. These messages are called growth factors, and they tell the cells to grow and divide.

But how do the cells hear these messages? This is where growth factor receptors come in.

Think of them like little ears on the surface of the cell. The growth factor molecules fit into the receptor, just like a key fits into a lock.

When the growth factor molecule fits into the receptor, it causes the receptor to change shape and this sends a signal into the cell to start growing and dividing.

So, without these receptors, the cells wouldn't be able to hear the growth factor messages and they wouldn't be able to do their jobs properly.

Pretty cool, huh?
