Okay kiddo, you know how we can see stars and planets in the sky at night? Well, sometimes those stars form a group and they make what's called a galaxy. And each galaxy has these big patches of glowing gas called H II regions.
This gas is made up of lots of tiny particles called atoms, and specifically hydrogen atoms that have lost some of their electrons. When these atoms get excited by the stars in the galaxy and absorb energy from them, they start to glow and give off light.
So H II regions are basically big glowing clouds of gas in space, and they're really important because they help astronomers study how stars form and how galaxies evolve over time. Plus, they're really pretty to look at!
