HTTP referer

A http referer is a piece of information that is sent from a web browser to a website, telling the website it came from the previous website.

For example, if you are visiting a website about puppies and then you click a link to visit a website about cats, the website about cats will see the http referer and know you came from the website about puppies. This helps websites know where their visitors are coming from.
