ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Haketia

Haketia is a very special language that people used to speak in certain parts of Spain, especially in the cities of Ceuta and Melilla. The people who spoke Haketia were called Sephardic Jews and they spoke this language for a long time, even while living in other places like Morocco or Israel.

Haketia is a mix of two languages: Spanish and Hebrew. It is what we call a "Ladino" language, which means it's a type of language that was spoken by Jewish people in certain parts of the world. Haketia has words from both Spanish and Hebrew, so it sounds different than both of those languages.

For example, instead of saying "hola" (which means "hello" in Spanish) they would say "shlam alakm" (which means the same thing, but in Haketia).

Today, not many people still speak Haketia. However, there are some groups of people who are trying to keep it alive by teaching it to others and including it in their cultural traditions. It's important to remember and celebrate languages like Haketia so that we don't lose them completely!
