ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Haratin

Haratin are people who have been historically enslaved in Mauritania, a country in West Africa. They are often dark-skinned, but not all dark-skinned people in Mauritania are haratin. They were enslaved by lighter-skinned people like the Moors and were forced to do hard work without getting paid or being able to leave. This practice of slavery was officially abolished in Mauritania in 1981, but it still happens today in a more hidden way. Haratin people still face discrimination and struggle to get jobs and education because of their past as enslaved people. It is important to treat all people with respect and not to discriminate against someone because of their skin color or background.
